Skippering for TRIP

Skippering refers to acting as the head of a boat. In order to skipper TRIP’s keel boats, you must meet the requirements according to the boat reservation rules and apply for skippering rights from the club’s board with a free-form application, which shows that the necessary requirements have been met.

Captains are people who can get the right to use coastal cruiser (FirsTrip) and archipelago cruisers. First mates can get the right to use archipelago cruisers, i.e. GinTrip and ElecTrip.

The right to use boats also requires boat-specific orientation or induction. Each boat is an individual and knowing the special features of one boat is not common knowledge.

As the skipper of Teekkaripurjehtijat, you agree that your name will be published in the skippers list on the website with contact information.

Club’s own skipper exam (kipparikoe/perämieskoe)

The skipper exam is performed on the basis of the skipper’s exam form, which should be thoroughly reviewed before the exam. If you wish to take the skipper’s exam, you can notify the board (hallitus@teekkaripurjehtijat.fi), or arrange for a suitable person to facilitate the test yourself. Alongside sailing, details related to the use of the boat will be reviewed during the exam. The skipper’s exam is also intended to serve as a learning opportunity. At the end of the skipper’s exam, the exam’s facilitator signs the skipper’s exam form, in which they either support or does not support the granting of skippering rights.

The skipper exam can be facilitated by TRIP captains who have a valid PORY instructor or teacher qualification.

Reserving a boat for skipper’s exam

The skipper candidate reserves the boat according to the normal common sail practice. The candidate collects crew registrations for sailing. During the exam, the skipper must demonstrate not only the control of the boat, but also their ability to instruct the crew and act as the head of the boat. The skipper candidate is responsible for the boat during the exam and acts as the head of the vessel.

More information about the skipper’s exams in Finnish can be found on TripWiki.
